Abstract

Background. During the period of agricultural reforms, the situation in the country was very difficult. Failures in socio-economic policy in rural areas forced the party leadership to look for those responsible for disrupting the pace of collectivization. Such culprits in the case of the “Labour peasant party” were found throughout the country. The processes were aimed at neutralizing the intellectuals critical to the plans of collectivization in order to stabilize the situation in the village. Evidence of this is the case of the “Ukrainian People’s Center”. Purpose – the destiny of academician M. S. Grushevsky, as a whole a person loyal to the Soviet power, to reflect these processes.
Materials and methods. Implementation of research tasks was achieved through the use of documents extracted from the Archives of the President of the Russian Federation and the Russian state archive of modern history. Methodological potential includes: philosophical principles of dialectics, namely objectivity, science, comprehensiveness, unity of historical and logical and others. The implementation of these principles helped to study the documentary sources related to the falsification of the investigation in the case of the “Ukrainian People’s Center” under the leadership of academician M. S. Grushevsky.
Results. The activity of the Politburo of the CPSU(b) and state security bodies on falsification of the case of the “Ukrainian People’s Center” is investigated. For the first time introduced into scientific circulation documents show that Stalin attached great importance to the “investigation” of the “Ukrainian People’s Center”. It is obvious that academician Grushevsky was released from custody for the purpose of its further use for confrontation with the nationalist movement in Ukraine and to influence a number of Ukrainian figures abroad.
Conclusions. In the early 1930s, the OGPU bodies were preparing trials: “Industrial Party”, “Union Bureau of the Central Committee of the RSDLP (Mensheviks)” and “Labor Peasant Party”. All these processes were interconnected. The case of the “peasant party” was originally considered as a branch of the Central Committee “Labor peasant party”. Then, the bodies of the GPU of Ukraine transformed it into a “Ukrainian people’s Center” under the leadership of academician M. S. Grushevsky. The fact that it was fabricated by state security bodies of the organization at present is not in doubt.
